RENOVATIONS, A COMPLETED LIBRARY AND A NETBALL FIELD FOR MPUMALANGA SCHOOLS

Eight schools in Mhluzi, Mpumalanga were the lucky winners of the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition. The schools each received a Cashbuild building material voucher to the value of R15 000 which means the schools will be able to improve and repair their premises. The vouchers were handed out at the Art-at-Heart ceremony at the refurbished Cashbuild Mhluzi store on the 13th of February 2020.

Mvuzo Primary School, Mhluzi Primary School and Manyano Primary School were just three of the eight schools that each received a Cashbuild building material voucher.

Mr William Mlombo, the principal of Mvuzo Primary School says they are grateful to Cashbuild for this voucher as there are quite a few items that require attention around the school. "We will be purchasing cement to redo the entrance way and walkways of the school. We need door handles and windowpanes to replace the ones that are broken in many of the classrooms."

Mhluzi Primary School's principal, Mrs Maneke Hlathi said: "The school building is quite dated so we would love to do some much-needed renovations just to refresh the building and grounds. Firstly, we need to repair the roof of the school building because not only is it old, but it is also very damaged in certain areas. So, we will need to purchase roof tiles and other necessary items for this task." Mrs Hlathi added that although the school roof is their main priority, she hopes to paint some of the classrooms and replace some missing tiles too.

Mr Vincent Mnguni, the principal of Manyano Primary School says they are so happy that they will be receiving this voucher as they may now be able to complete two big projects they are currently working on. "We started with the construction of a netball field recently, so with this voucher we will be purchasing the fencing and cement to complete it. We have also built a library and would like to buy tiles to tile the floor."

Building material vouchers totaling R120 000 were handed out at the Art-at-Heart ceremony at the refurbished Cashbuild Mhluzi store on the 13th of February 2020. The children entertained everyone with singing, cultural dancing and theatrical performances.

The Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition entails learners from each school to submit their best artwork to Cashbuild. This artwork is displayed at the ceremony and remains on display in the Cashbuild store for the next six years.

Artwork was judged and three winners from each school were named. Winners received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively. The Manager's Choice award was presented to a learner from Reatlegile Primary School who was the overall winner of the artwork competition. This award was announced on the day and the winning learner received a backpack filled with stationery and a trophy. The winner was also given the honour of officially opening the refurbished store.

Since the Art-at-Heart campaign was launched 19 years ago, Cashbuild has helped more than 3 500 schools in Southern Africa with over R44-million worth of building materials. Cashbuild is BEE compliant and every time a store is opened, relocated or refurbished, Cashbuild not only makes donations to local schools, but also creates jobs for community members.

The Art-at-Heart competition is a southern African Cashbuild initiative whereby donations are made to some of the region's most needy schools.
