Southern Africa’s leading building material retailer, Cashbuild, has joined hands with financial services provider Old Mutual to invest in education in Limpopo. The total amount donated by Cashbuild to date is R 2,5 million.

The partnership has seen five schools renovated in the impoverished Sekhukhune region being upgraded through extensive building renovations to meet the Department of Education standards.

This project will benefit 4 287 children who will now be able to focus on learning unhindered by poor facilities. Old Mutual has been most successful in education interventions focused on academic improvement; this particular community intervention has been tremendous as the pass rate has improved remarkably. This is despite the dilapidated infrastructure these children are studying under.

The project also included building new classrooms and ablution facilities. In Baropodi Inclusive Primary, the project renovated three existing classrooms and completed a half-built building that provided four new classrooms. In Ngwanamatlang Secondary, three existing classrooms and all bathrooms were renovated. Madibong English Medium Primary School saw all classrooms and offices renovated, and a new bathroom block was added. Lengama Secondary, the project renovated two dilapidated blocks and removed two prefab classrooms and lastly in Kalafong Primary, two blocks of existing classrooms and added a new bathroom block.

Executive Director for Cashbuild, Wimpie Van Aswegen, says education is very important to ensure the long term sustainability of communities where we trade. “Through a programme called Art@Heart, we have been investing in education for many years. Our investment aims to ensure that the education infrastructure in these schools is conducive to learning, and with Old Mutual, we are taking the same approach,” says Mr Van Aswegen. To date, Cashbuild has spent R45,2 Million improving 3 543 schools infrastructure across our trading areas.
