BETTER SCHOOL BUILDINGS THANKS TO CASHBUILD

Eight schools in Oudtshoorn, Klein Karoo, were the lucky winners of the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition and their prize now allows them to improve school facilities. The schools each won a Cashbuild building material voucher to the value of R15 000, which was handed out at the opening ceremony of the refurbished Cashbuild Oudtshoorn store on the 25th of April 2019.

Klaarstroom Primer, PJ Badenhorst Primer and Colridge Primer were just three of the eight schools that each received a Cashbuild building material voucher.

Klaarstroom Primer's principal, Mr De Jong, will be using the voucher to upgrade the hygienic conditions of both the boys and girls toilets, as well as paint some of the classrooms. "We are pleased as this voucher will allow us to upgrade both the boys and girls toilets. We can now also purchase paint and paint the classrooms." He adds that the school has not been painted in 15 years and so this award from Cashbuild is an absolute blessing.

Mr Pietersen, the principal of PJ Badenhorst Primer said: "The main strategy this year is a do a complete paint project of the school grounds. We are so thankful to Cashbuild, as this voucher will enable us to kick-start this huge paint process that we have planned. We will be painting both the inside and outside of the classrooms." He says he is excited to see the faces of the learners as they enter their newly-painted classrooms.

Colridge Primer's principal, Mr Adams said: "We have many students waiting for their transport in the afternoons, so with this wonderful Cashbuild voucher, we will build a shelter with a roofing structure where learners can take shelter while they wait. This will be very beneficial to the learners, especially when it rains."

At the At the Art-at-Heart ceremony of the refurbished Cashbuild Oudtshoorn store on the 25th of April 2019, when the building material vouchers totaling R120 000 were handed out to the eight winning schools, the children entertained everyone with singing, cultural dancing and theatrical performances.

The Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition entails learners from each school to submit their best artwork to Cashbuild. This artwork is displayed at the ceremony, and remains on display in the Cashbuild store for the next six years.

Artwork was judged and three winners from each school were named. Winners received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively. The Manager's Choice was awarded to a learner from Bergsig Primer who was the overall winner of the artwork competition. This award was announced on the day and the winning learner received a stationery pack and a glass trophy. The winner was also given the honour of officially opening the new store.

Since the Art-at-Heart campaign was launched 18 years ago, Cashbuild has helped more than 3 200 schools in Southern Africa with over R40-million worth of building materials. Cashbuild is BEE compliant and every time a store is opened, relocated or refurbished, Cashbuild not only makes donations to local schools, but also creates jobs for community members.

The Art-at-Heart competition is a southern African Cashbuild initiative whereby donations are made to some of the region's most needy schools.
