Southern Africa’s leading building material retailer, Cashbuild, has extended a helping hand to young people in Ekurhuleni. This is through a donation of delivery bicycles to DoorStep Delivery. The donation will be in the form of 3 bicycles and associated items, including delivery boxes.
DoorStep Delivery is a community-based enterprise started by young people in Tsakane township and operates in neighbouring townships and hopes to expand across Ekurhuleni. Started by Thandanani Madi, the company delivers food groceries to elderly ladies, families who purchase these online. It has also expanded by helping local brands who want to deliver their products to the community.
Thandanani explains their model. “The delivery of products by brands is a well-known concept and approach to doing business, but it was less available in our poor township areas. We have brought that service here in our area, and this helps a lot of our elderly people and busy families as convenience is a major offering we have,” says Thandanani and explains further “we are very glad that Cashbuild is now helping us in this fashion as it is going to grow our business in leaps and bounds.”
Head of Community Support Initiatives at Cashbuild, Thembelani Tukwayo, says the company is moving towards ensuring that its community support programs are income generating for communities where it trades as opposed to just handouts. “DoorStep Delivery is an interesting company, it’s started by local young people, helping the local community and generating income. This is about leg up as opposed to hand out. We are glad we could assist them, and we look forward to their future growth,” explains Mr Tukwayo. Cashbuild is assisting Khona La local shops concept in Alex and building a local enterprise center in Mabopane. “This project is in line with our efforts of making a meaningful investment in our host communities. What excites me most about this project is that it helps local entrepreneurs. There is a dire need to improve economic opportunities that are created at a local level, especially in the township and rural environments, and this is where our stores are located,” says Mr Tukwayo.
